Musicians are better at learning non-native sound contrasts even in non-tonal languages

چکیده
It is very difficult for adults to perceive phonetic contrasts in their non-native language. In this study we explored the effects of phonetic training for different populations of people (musicians and non-musicians) and with different kinds of phoneme contrast (timing-based, like the Hindi /g/-/k/ contrast, and pitch-based, like the Mandarin /ı̄/-/ı́/ tonal contrast). We found that musicians had superior perception for both contrasts, not just the pitch-based one. For both phonemes, training had little to no effect. We consider the implications of this for first and second language acquisition.

The Influence of Tonal Awareness and Musical Experience on Tone Word Learning
Phonological awareness has been shown to play a significant role in language learning. The present study examined the effect of improving pitch identification ability and tonal awareness on Cantonese tone word learning. A group of native English listeners received three days of Cantonese tone training to first improve their tone perception. They then learned the meanings of 15 vocabulary items ...
متن کاملPerceptual Improvement of Lexical Tones in Infants: Effects of Tone Language Experience
To learn words in a tonal language, tone-language learners should not only develop better abilities for perceiving consonants and vowels, but also for lexical tones. The divergent trend of enhancing sensitivity to native phonetic contrasts and reduced sensitivity to non-native phonetic contrast is theoretically essential to evaluate effects of listening to an ambient language on speech percepti...
متن کاملAbsolute Pitch and L Tone Perception by Non-mu Absolute Pitch Non-tonal
In this paper we investigate whether musically trained nontonal language speakers perceive lexical tone better than their non-musician counterparts. Three groups of English language speakers, non-musicians, musicians, and musicians with absolute pitch (n=24, N=72), were tested for same/different discrimination of Central Thai tone pairs. These were presented in three separate conditions: as spe...
متن کاملMusical experience modulates categorical perception of lexical tones in native Chinese speakers
Although musical training has been shown to facilitate both native and non-native phonetic perception, it remains unclear whether and how musical experience affects native speakers' categorical perception (CP) of speech at the suprasegmental level. Using both identification and discrimination tasks, this study compared Chinese-speaking musicians and non-musicians in their CP of a lexical tone c...
متن کاملMusicality and non-native speech sound processing are linked through temporal, pitch and spectral acuity
Are observed links between musicality and non-native speech sound processing due to superior sensory processing of temporal, pitch, and spectral information, which benefits both musical and linguistic processing? Native English speakers discriminated Norwegian tonal contrasts, non-linguistic puretone analogues, Norwegian vowels, and short tones differing in temporal, pitch and spectral characte...
